Detroit: An American Autopsy

By: Charlie LeDuff

Publisher: Penguin Books

ISBN: 9780143124467

Charlie LeDuff, a Pulitzer Prize-wining reporter with the New York Times, returned to his home town, to his roots, to a city that was once the richest in America. Taking a job at the Detroit News, he uses his investigative skills to unearth what happened, what is happening. Looking at the state of his once-beloved city with clear, but compassionate, eyes, LeDuff takes you through the remnants of a once great city and its issues. No jobs translates to no tax base which means no revenue to run the city services. Add to that the corruption that skims off the little money there is, and it’s easy to see the problems. Solutions, however, aren’t so apparent. This is an incredibly interesting book, easy to read and hard to put down.
