SENATE

By The Issue Wonk

The Senate is composed of 100 members, two (2) from each state, regardless of the state’s population. A senator must be at least 30 years of age, have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine (9) years, and, at the time of election, be a resident of the state from which elected. A senator serves for six (6) years. One-third (1/3) of all senators are re-elected every two (2) years. Of the two (2) senators from each state, the one serving the longest is referred to as the “senior” senator from that state. The other is referred to as the “junior” senator. If a senator dies or resigns during the term, the governor from that state must call a special election unless the state legislature has authorized the governor to appoint a successor until the next election. Most state legislatures have granted their governors the power of appointment.
